(I have emailed him asking permission to post this picture)

Yesterday I found National Geographic’s website, which has a section called Daily Ancient World News which covers a variety of subjects from ancient archeology to paleontology to anthropology to history in general. I love reading about and studying the world of ancient humans, trying to figure out their religious beliefs, tracing out pagan past. I guess i should have stayed in college and become a religious anthropologist, but i am not cut out for such a scholarly position, so i remain a witch who is an occasional science nerd blogger instead.

The link above leads to several hundred stories going back to 2010, and i spent parts of the last two days going through all of them, and present here are a couple of my favorite ones that may be of interest to witches and pagans who read this blog.

They found whetstones that have traces of metallic alloys made only by Viking metalsmiths:

Evidence of Viking Outpost Found in Canada

About thunderstones:

“Thor’s Hammer” Found in Viking Graves

And from another part of the website a story of a shamaness trying to heal the land.

World Heritage and Climate Change: Lessons From Indigenous Peoples of Altai, Russia

Enjoy, and happy surfing the other stories of interest to you.

Dr Sex and The Electric Love Bed

I love these historical oddities Lenora writes about at her blog. Enjoy!

The Haunted Palace

A lot of people think  sex was invented in the 1960’s with it’s free-love, orgasms for all, and sex therapy…prior to that people simply pro-created out of a sense of duty.  How dull…..

Well, obviously that’s simply not true (Ok so, maybe the Victorian’s were a bit prudish, but hey, Victoria still managed to knock out nine children so Albert must have been keeping her amused between the sheets).

But what about bad sex? Or no sex? What about infertility? what did people do and where did they go for their sexual healing…?

Enter the eighteenth century’s answer to Dr Ruth:  The first Sex Therapy Superstar and all round crowd pleaser: ‘Doctor’ James Graham! Roy Porter acerbically described in the following terms:

“James Graham, former pedlar of health through sex-therapy and mudbaths, later founded the ‘New and True Christian Church, practiced Adamic nakedness, died insane.”(1)

“Stairway to Heaven” Sung by “Heart” at the Kennedy Center

I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, and of course Stairway to Heaven is one of my favorite air guitar songs. Here at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on 26 December 2012 they had a tribute to several artists including the surviving members of Led Zeppelin who were in attendance. The group Heart sang Stairway to Heaven in this video, which did bring a tear to my eye, especially watching Robert Plant’s reaction. I forgot to mention i first found this at the Currents and Waves mostly poetry blog i am now exploring. Enjoy!

For some reason i cannot embed this video, so just follow this link.

And here is a link to a longer video called Led Zeppelin – Kennedy Center Honors (12-26-12) FULL Segment which has a Rockumentary of the group and has the groups listed below singing their songs pretty damned well, described here from YT:

Entire Led Zeppelin portion of the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors Show televised on December 26, 2012 including: Introduction by Jack Black, the Foo Fighters playing “Rock and Roll”, Kid Rock playing “Ramble On”, Lenny Kravitz playing “Whole Lotta Love” and Jason Bonham, Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) and a full choir playing “Stairway To Heaven”.

And i have to include here the full lyrics from Stairway to Heaven:

Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin

Songwriters: PAGE, JAMES PATRICK (JIMMY)/PLANT, ROBERT ANTHONY

There’s a lady who’s sure

All that glitters is gold

And she’s buying a stairway to heaven

And when she gets there she knows

If the stores are closed

With a word she can get what she came for

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

And she’s buying a stairway to heaven

There’s a sign on the wall

But she wants to be sure

‘Cause you know sometimes words have

Two meanings

In a tree by the brook

There’s a songbird who sings

Sometimes all of our thoughts are

Misgiven

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it makes me wonder

There’s a feeling I get

When I look to the west

And my spirit is crying

For leaving

In my thoughts I have seen

Rings of smoke through the trees

And the voices of those

Who stand looking

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it really makes me wonder

And it’s whispered that soon

If we all call the tune

Then the piper will lead us to reason

And a new day will dawn

For those who stand long

And the forests will

Echo with laughter

And it makes me wonder

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, ooh, whoa, oh

If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow

Don’t be alarmed now

It’s just a spring clean

For the May-queen

Yes, there are two paths you can go by

But in the long run

There’s still time to change

The road you’re on

And it makes me wonder

Aw, uh, oh

Your head is humming and it won’t go

In case you don’t know

The piper’s calling you to join him

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?

And did you know

Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

(Solo)

And as we wind on down the road

Our shadows taller than our soul

There walks a lady we all know

Who shines white light and wants to show

How everything still turns to gold

And if you listen very hard

The tune will come to you at last

When all are one and one is all

To be a rock and not to roll

And she’s buying a stairway

To heaven…

COC Solitary Summer Solstice Ritual Pictures

Coven of the Catta

Due to extenuating circumstances no one in the coven was able to come to my house for our Summer Solstice ritual, so I just did it as a solitary ritual outside in my circle of stones i call Snakehedge. When i work outside i do not use any metal tools, just wooden and stone, so as to not frighten the Fey. I had a balefire already prepared from collecting pieces of fallen branches all spring. I laid a circle of yellow corn around the central standing stones, which represent the Goddess and God, and propped my two wands upon them. On the central pentagram stone between them i placed a dish i had painted for the element fire with the runes for the swirling swastika sun. On the tree stump altar to the south i lit charcoal on one stone and burned copal incense. In another trough shaped stone i…

Carrowkeel Cairns – Irish Summer Solstice Sunset with the song “Journey To Three Rock Mountain” by Claire Roche

I found this beautiful video and post called Summer Solstice Alignments in Ireland on the Confessions of a Hedge Witch blog and have embedded it below.

“It is from Carrowkeel’s Cairn G, a passage tomb in the west of the country (Ireland), is aligned to the setting sun of the Summer Solstice.” BTW Cairn G is about 700 years older than Newrgrange.

The comments on the YT page by John Willmott are interesting in that “Claire wrote this when she was 15 years old as a reflection of riding a horse over Three Rock Mountain outside Dublin, a much less developed place then. She wrote and recorded her thoughts, mainly improvised, on a Sony 2 track reel to reel when she came home. This track is that original recording with a front vocal track added 40 years later but the vocal and piano backing is still Claire at 15 years old.”

Enjoy the music and beautiful filming, and Blessed Summer Solstice to you all. I will do our Coven’s ritual tomorrow morning and post some pics from that tomorrow.

Mysteria Misc. Maxima: June 21st, 2013

Good collection of links here. I am just going to reblog this entire post because i was going to blog about the Doreen Valiente plaque anyway (BTW there is the DoreenValiente.org website with some interesting bio facts i have not read before in the section on the right, but when i tried to link it here it appears to have crashed) , and i like the Inaugural issue of Correspondences which looks like some interesting articles there, and Is Thelema a Religion, and the Impossible ethics of the Wiccan Rede, which has always been a bug up my ass. Enjoy and Blessed Summer Solstice.

The Allegories of Subjugation

I have posted on this artist and blogger Valerie Herron once before. In this post she features more of her art as an allegory for the human condition. I like how she uses the same critters and creatures in each picture to tell this story, and i think her explanation of each work of art is excellent and thought provoking. In fact she got me thinking about many of my own inner demons. You can also visit her at her website to learn more about her, and she has a Tumblr page also.

Orator Sæpientia

Ok, I’m going to finally embark upon the daunting task that is creating a blog post about my thesis work. I didn’t make this easy for myself when attempting to explain the work in a concise fashion for my Thesis Defense presentation, so the idea of summarizing the work even further into a blog post has been giving me nightmares for weeks.

Let’s make a deal: for those of you who would rather not wade through a dissertation on the work (nor be inundated with my politics) I will set up a slide show of the final images so you can FINALLY see the images that I’ve been bitching about for months. However, if you are left with questions about my process, choices, or are just confounded by the imagery, I will include a lengthy (yet distilled, trust me) explanation of the work.

Without further ado, here is my thesis project

Britain’s Wicca Man – video about Gerald Gardner – reblogged from The Wild Hunt

Today The Wild Hunt posted a great set of news stories called Pagan Voices: Gavin Bone, Teo Bishop and Britain’s Wicca Man, the latter being a short documentary about Gerald Gardner by Professor Ronald Hutton, which i have embedded below. Though i am no great fan of Hutton’s because of his views that Wicca is a modern invention with little real pagan roots, he does do a great job in this 30 minute documentary of presenting a well rounded history of Gerald Gardner. I especially found of interest the section about a High Priest of Witchcraft who owns many of Gardner’s magickal tools and original Book of Shadows and in seeing his collection of them.

Also of great interest to me was a two part interview linked from TWH with Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone. Here is Part One and Part Two with Part Three just released today 6/20. I just love to hear her and them writing and speaking about the type of Witchcraft they practice now, as evident in these interviews and in their most recent book Progressive Witchcraft, which i highly recommend.

So enjoy all the links at TWH to these recent stories about what these and other Witches, Pagans and Druids are up, and enjoy the video. Blessed Be!

Warning – This story contains wording of a sexual nature. You must be 18+ to read further. I am sure this will offend many of my followers, but perhaps please a few. Enjoy.

Back in 1993 I visited my Typhonian OTO friends in Pittsurgh PA, Soror Ayizan and her mate Frater Ghede (my name for him). They generously took me on a drive that weekend to some of the really old graveyards in that old steel town.

Some background on Soror Ayizan is that she is the accomplished painter of the Shadow Tarot of the 22 Qliphoth of the Nightside of the Kabbalistic Tree accessible through the Daath Sephirah, as written about by the late Kenneth Grant. Over an unknown period of time she and her mate used various techniques to induce trance, some of which I assume were tantricke in nature, and these original paintings were made on canvas of about 4 x 2 foot size. My first visit there I slept in the room where they were stored, but had no problems or disturbing dreams. Since then they have publicized these as a Tarot deck for sale at ungodly prices at Amazon due to its rarity and limited printing at the time, and have painted the minor arcana of this full Shadow Tarot.

One fun story about visiting them was that one time one of their friends came over and it turned out he had been one of the zombie extras in George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” low budget B movie which was filmed in Pittsburgh in 1968. If anyone has seen this movie he is the one who gets his arm ripped off during this zombie resurrection.

Perhaps because of their dark magickal workings a Typhonial vortex was generated that opened these dark doorways at the nearby graveyard which has come alive with the vampire inccubi and succubi dead souls that I now relate of here. Or perhaps my own twisted fertile imagination got away from me to come up with these visions.

This is not a photo from this cemetery but is what the phallic grave markers on Bishop’s Hill looked like. ©2013 GLHoke

They drove me to an old Catholic cemetery in a bad part of the city. Near the entrance and the cathedral was what I called Bishop’s Hill. It was on a little knoll surrounded by a black rod iron fence. Crowded within it were the soaring fancy marble grave markers of Archbishops and Bishops and other clergy of that Diocese. The enclosure and grave markers had a gothic and phallic look to it. Yet I knew beneath those proud monuments lay the decayed bodies of those fathers of the church, some of which I am sure had dark secrets to rot within them. What guilt may still dwell within them in their purgatory of the grave that may turn them into hungry ghosts, or sex starved inccubi?

In another part of the cemetery they also took me to one of the strangest cremation repositories I have ever seen. It was shaped like a huge beehive and inside were the niches from floor to ceiling that once held the cremation urns of the ashes of the dead, now stolen and desecrated. Like I said earlier, it was not the best part of the city.

We walked down Bishop’s Hill and there was this huge black iron cross standing with the crossed spear and vinegar sop from the crucifixion, a cross and an X in dark contrast of form.

Just down below there, on the lowest part of the cemetery were the plainly carved small gravestones of the sisters of the nunnery which had been attached to the cathedral. The contrast between their humble graves and those of the male ecclesiastical authorities up on the hill was mind blowing. In Catholic Christianity all that matters is male authority, and the female and all things feminine are “fallen”. At the poor dead nun’s graveyard I could imagine the writhing souls of these virgin nuns turning into blood and sex sucking succubi.

I could further imaging that at midnight under a Dark Moon that large white serpentine ectoplasm ghosts crawl out from beneath the Bishop’s tombs and slide downhill to coil around the Black Cross at the base of the hill where they await the dead souls of the nuns who arise to meet them in the form of red snakes lustfully entwined in religious ecstasy and prepared by flagellating each other, because as Jesus suffered, so must they.  Others, the ghosts of pedophile priests who were once schoolmasters, stay on Bishop’s Hill cavorting with each other and the ghosts of choir boys and communing on the semen-coated hosts of the Body-of-Christ. At the nun’s lower graveyards some nuns also stay behind, engaged in their lesbian lusts, using their crucifixes and the mummified phalluses of Jesus and Peter to pleasure each other, drinking from the bloody Cup of Mary Babalon.

The lustful souls of former priests and nuns now meet at the Black Cross where skeletal nuns sit and feel the ghostly serpents crawl out from under the cross, into their yonis and arses, up their spines, licking and sucking at the necks, penetrating their virgin mouths in unholy necrophilic tantra, sucking their remaining astral fluids. This ghastly orgy happens every new moon they say, especially on Good Friday when Jesus is in Hell and Satan rules on earth again.

On my return home my disturbed soul and twisted mind thought up and wrote this as a short story, which has remained all these years in my archives.  Now decades later I tried to re-write it here, but I am not a writer as you can see by my all too purple pen. Maybe good writers like those at Freaky Folk Tales and In the Chimehours (who are Real writers) can turn this into a real Gothic Lovecraftian story, if they dare touch the subject matter.

Postscript – This morning in my house i had to safely capture and release a huge wolf spider about the size of the palm of my hand. And just now also in the house i had to capture a baby copperhead snake which was striking at me the whole time as i got it under a brass urn. No kidding. Now That is a scary tale for sure! Ah summer in the woods in the Appalachians!
