Today, 18 March 2013, marks the 699th Anniversary of the Execution of Jacques DeMolay Grand Master of the Knights Templar. Besides these Wiki links here is on from an official Masonic website entitled The Death of Jacques DeMolay which is their memorial from last year. After years of torture he and his fellow Templars confessed to various “heretical” beliefs and practices and then was not burned but slowly barbequed to death on this date. The Catholic church had actually reversed the decision to execute him because he had “recounted” his heresy at one point, but the bankrupt King Phillip IV of France went ahead and killed him under his civil authority so he could grab all the money the Templars held so he could pay for his wars. There is a legend that on the pyre his last words were (to quote Wiki again) “‘from this your heinous judgement to the living and true God, who is in Heaven’, warning the pope that, within a year and a day, he and Philip IV would be obliged to answer for their crimes in God’s presence.” And the fact is that the Pope and King did die within a year.
